Oil mist almost always results in oily premises, equipment and products. Modern metalworking machinery is often controlled by sensitive electronics and production is lowered by unplanned disruptions – caused by contaminated circuit boards. Handling equipment and pieces of products coated in a thin film of oil is not an acceptable working practice and definitely not production-friendly. Removing oil mist is therefore essential for workplace safety and cleanliness.
Oil mist affects the health of machine operators, disrupts production and settles everywhere in the area, resulting in slippery floors and work surfaces. Almost all machining operations create oil mist to some extent. Oil mist is the aerosol that is formed when oil is used for cooling or lubricating during the machining of metal and some plastic components. Oil smoke is formed when oil contacts the hot machined surface, vaporizes, and condenses as sub-micron particles. It is well known that prolonged and repeated exposure to oil products can be harmful to health, which means that good ventilation must be ensured under all working conditions. Oil emulsions normally contain 90-95% water and the remaining is soluble oil. The oil mist consists of aerosols from oil or oil/water emulsion. Mineral oil-based metalworking fluids are known as neat cutting oils or straight oils. Emulsions normally contain a number of undisclosed additives.
Nederman FibreDrain Oil Mist Collectors
Nederman solutions for oil mist filtration are designed for continuous operations in demanding airflow applications. Our unique FibreDrain® technology ensures superior separation performance and long filter media life, thus minimizing your overall costs and ensuring total peace of mind. A wide range of filters is available, covering the entire spectrum from wet to medium wet and semi dry (MQL) and dry applications.
Nederman oil mist filters feature a unique, specially treated fibre surface that allows the collected droplets to coalesce, grow in fibre intersections and finally drain by gravity out of the filter medium. This technology, called FibreDrain® ensures superior efficiency even under the most challenging conditions in continuous operations.
The filters don’t absorb or get clogged by the oil. Instead, thanks to FibreDrain®, the air is thoroughly cleaned and a maximum amount of coolant can be retrieved and reused.
How it works- Nederman FibreDrain® oil mist solutions collect oil mist and oil smoke at the source, i.e. directly at the metalworking machine, either enclosed or open. The oil-laden air is passed through the layers of compressed filter media at low velocity.
The airstream enters at the bottom of the filter unit and passes upward through the filter cartridges. The filter stack is progressive in filtration properties, which means that the smaller the particle, the further it will penetrate the filters in the air flow direction. The captured mist drains from the filter surface by gravity down in the sump of the collector.
Plymovent Mist Wizard
MistWizard is designed to be direct mounted on a machine tool with no need for ducting or use of additional floor space. The filter will effectively collect the coolant mist and smoke from the machine process and return the recovered coolant back to the machine tool. The filter unit is provided with a range of options to allow easy, fast installation.
Features
- Efficient filtration of oil mist and fumes
- Low installation cost
- Low energy consumption
- Dedicated filter unit for one machine tool
- Low operation cost
Plymovent MistWizardTM is ideal for single CNC machine tool enclosures where the internal volume is between 2 m3/70 ft3 and 4 m3/140 ft3. MistWizardTM is a self-contained metalworking fluid recovery system, which allows you the ability to direct the MistWizardTM to your machine tool and remote mount a central exhaust fan to create a system installation. The advantage of a central system installation is that you can operate up to 12 MW-2 units just using one fan. This, in combination with the use of an energy saving variable frequency drive, will cut your energy consumption of the system by 25-50%.
Plymovent Mist Eliminator
The MistEliminator is a modular filtration system that reduces the background concentration of oil mist in lathes or dedicated (CNC) machine centers during metalworking processes. Depending on the type of oil mist, you can either choose the ME-3 or ME-4 series. All filter units and filter banks are modular and can be tailored to your needs.
An additional HEPA filter is recommended in case of recirculation. Recirculation ensures that expensively heated or cooled air stays within the workplace. Not only does this save energy, it also reduces your heating and ventilation costs.
Apart from the stand-alone stationary units, Plymovent also offers all-in solutions. The ME-42/F1 and ME-42/F2 contain an integrated extraction fan on top of the standard filter unit. The main advantage of a built-in fan, is there is no need for ducting.
Features
- Comply with health and safety standards
- Minimize health risks in the workplace
- Safe work environment
- Improved productivity
- Reduced maintenance/operational costs
- Energy saving; in case of recirculation

Applications where oil mist or oil smoke arises when metalworking fluids (MWF’s) are used to either cool metal workpieces or lubricate parts and tools during the metalworking process. MWF is a generic term and used as a coolant or lubricant.
